Cantabile 4-- | Crack

Not the Elias Varga of now—the stooped, half-blind man with ink-stained fingers. He saw the boy of seven, standing in the rubble of Budapest, 1956. He saw his father's hand, still holding a broken cello neck, protruding from the collapsed stairwell. He saw the silence that had followed the shelling—a silence so complete that he had spent the rest of his life trying to fill it.

The fourth minute: the violin's belly split from f-hole to endpin. A thin line of light emerged from the crack—not daylight, not lamplight, but the light that exists in the instant before a migraine. Ilona shielded her eyes. Elias did not. He stared into the crack as if it were a mirror.

A knock at the door.

Elias's face had gone white. Sweat beaded on his forehead, not from exertion but from listening . He was not playing the music; the music was playing him, using his hands as its instruments. His mother's violin hummed with a warmth that contradicted the coldness of the notes—the warmth of a body falling through ice, still alive, still reaching. Cantabile 4-- Crack

In the third minute, the silver string snapped. Elias caught it with his teeth, held it taut, and kept playing with his mouth and his left hand alone. The sound changed: became wetter, more intimate. The note that could not exist now existed, and it was hungry .

"I remember," he said. "I remember what came before the silence."

But the Cantabile 4-- Crack began with silence. Not the Elias Varga of now—the stooped, half-blind

"Isn't that the point of music?"

The score lay open on his desk, its final movement titled simply: Cantabile 4-- Crack . Two dashes, like the pause before a glacier calves into the sea. The "--" was not a rest, not a fermata. It was a held breath. A promise.

Elias dipped his nib again, though the inkwell had been dry for three days. The scratch of metal on paper continued anyway, etching notes that had no names. His left hand trembled—not from age, but from the pressure of a melody that wanted to be born as a fracture. He saw the silence that had followed the

"And what was that?"

The first crack always comes without warning.
