Kaelen tilted his head. The gesture was so human, so him , that she almost laughed with relief. Almost.
“You shouldn’t be awake,” Rina said. Her voice was flat, clinical—the tone she used when she was scared. She dropped a heavy toolkit onto the rusted table. “You’ve been at it for fourteen hours. The neural feedback alone should have put you in a coma.”
She didn’t scream. She’d been trained not to. But her hand moved to the pulse-pistol at her hip.
“Then what?”
Kaelen stood up slowly. He walked to the grimy window that overlooked the rain-slicked streets of the lower city. Far below, a line of autonomous patrol drones moved in perfect, silent synchronization. They had been doing the same loop for days.
Kaelen’s blood ran cold. Because the voice was his own.
He turned, confused. “What?”
Kaelen’s shadow on the wall wasn’t his own.
The voice came from everywhere and nowhere. It was Kaelen’s voice, but flattened, like a recording played backward. Rina drew her weapon.
