Not a flutter. A deliberate slide, as if pushed by an invisible finger. The poem had repositioned itself by three centimeters. Honami stumbled backward, knocking over a stack of restoration tools. The clatter was obscene in that holy quiet.
The archive was built to exclude sound: concrete walls, vacuum-sealed doors, a ventilation system that purred like a sleeping cat. The step was deliberate. Leather on limestone. She spun around, but the long reading room was empty—only the ghost of her own fear reflected in the glass-fronted cases.

Honami looked at the page. The corrected poem. The frog that did not jump. She knew this poem. She had memorized every authorized transcription. The original read: “The old pond / a frog jumps in / sound of water.” This version read: “The old pond / a frog hesitates / silence deepens.”
