In an era of Bollywood dominated by high-octane action spectacles and glossy romances set in foreign locales, Bareilly Ki Barfi arrived in 2017 like a breath of fresh, dust-laden, Uttar Pradesh air. Directed by (of Nil Battey Sannata fame), this film is a delightful adaptation of the French novel The Ingredients of Love (and the Italian film Mine vaganti ). It’s a sweet, sour, and utterly endearing tale of mistaken identity, self-discovery, and the messy reality of love in a small town. The book, a tragic love story, features a heroine who is "clumsy, loud, and smokes" — exactly like Bitti. Convinced the author is her soulmate, she sets out to find him. She meets (Ayushmann Khurrana), the charming, witty owner of the small printing press that published the book.
