In April 1992, a young man with a backpack and a copy of War and Peace hitchhiked into the remote wilderness north of Mt. McKinley in Alaska. His name was Christopher McCandless. Four months later, he was found dead inside an abandoned bus, weighing just 67 pounds. His story, immortalized by Jon Krakauer in the book Into the Wild , has since become a cultural Rorschach test: Is he a heroic idealist or a reckless fool?
