Gallo smiles. It’s worse than a threat. “Then the wind changes again. Your daughter. Your ex-wife. That bright-eyed boy of yours on the well pad. We know where everyone sleeps, Mr. Norris. You made sure of that when you killed our men. The only question now is whether you want to be our enemy or our employee.” Tommy rubs his eyes

Tommy doesn’t react. He just stares out the window at the endless, dark expanse of pump jacks silhouetted against a bruised sky. Episode 9 doesn’t start with action. It starts with the quiet before the inevitable storm. Gallo smiles

Tommy doesn’t flinch. He just picks up his phone, dials a number from memory, and says:

“And if I say no?”

His crew hits a pocket of hydrogen sulfide. The monitor screams. Everyone runs. Everyone but a greenhand named Leo, who freezes. Cooper doesn’t think. He tackles Leo, drags him to the safety of the truck, and seals the cab just as the wind shifts a cloud of deadly gas over the rig.
