Speak Khmer - Marriage Not Dating

“Tell her: ‘ខ្ញុំសុខចិត្តរង់ចាំមនុស្សដែលស្រលាញ់ខ្ញុំ មិនមែនមនុស្សដែលគ្រាន់តែត្រូវការប្រពន្ធ’ — ‘I’d rather wait for someone who loves me, not someone who just needs a wife.’”

Scene: A Phnom Penh coffee shop. Two friends, Srey Leak (30, pressured by family) and Dara (32, cynical about love).

(leans in) “Logical? Love without logic is chaos. But marriage without even dating? That’s a prison with a golden key. កុំយកការប្រញាប់របស់គ្រួសារមកបំផ្លាញជីវិតខ្លួនឯង — Don’t let your family’s rush destroy your own life.” Marriage Not Dating Speak Khmer

“He says dating is for teenagers. មនុស្សធំរៀបការត្រូវតែសមហេតុផល — Adults marry logically.”

“So you’ll accept a proposal without knowing if he cheats, yells, or ignores you? Dating is the test drive! ណាត់គ្នាមួយឆ្នាំ ដឹងចិត្តគ្នាហើយរៀបការ — Date for a year, know each other’s hearts, then marry.” Love without logic is chaos

(looks down) “But I’m 30. In Khmer families, ស្រីណាមិនទាន់រៀបការ គេថាជាស្រីនៅតែក្នុងផ្ទះ — an unmarried woman is still ‘just in the house.’ I’m tired of the whispers.”

“My mother saw his photo. A doctor. Owns a house. She said, ‘កូនកុំនៅតែបែកគ្នាលេង។ រៀបការហើយទើបបានសុខ’ ” (Don’t just break up for fun. Only marriage brings true peace.) a spoken word Khmer poem

“He said the same thing: ‘ខ្ញុំចង់រៀបការ មិនមែនចង់ណាត់ជួបលេងទេ’ — ‘I want marriage, not dating games.’ He wants kids within a year.”

(scoffs) “That’s not romance. That’s a business deal with a wedding ceremony. ស្នេហ៍គ្មានទេ តែបែបនេះហៅថារៀបការដើម្បីសង្គម — No love. This is marriage for society’s sake.”

"Marriage Not Dating" — in Khmer mindset, a clash of tradition vs. heart. រៀបការ មិនមែនណាត់ជួប — But without dating, can marriage ever be real love? Would you like this piece adapted into a short film script, a spoken word Khmer poem, or a social media caption series?

“So you’ll marry him without even dating first? That’s like buying fish without tasting the soup — ដូចទិញត្រីដោយមិនភ្លក់សម្ល .”
