In the dense, spiritual heartland of Tamil Nadu, where the Kaveri River meanders and ancient temples whisper secrets of the past, lies the village of Nanjupuram . This place is inextricably linked to one of the most enigmatic and revered spiritual figures of the 20th century—a Tamil Yogi whose real name remains unknown, but whose miracles, prophecies, and simple wisdom continue to draw thousands of devotees.

If you ever find yourself walking the dusty lanes of Thanjavur district, take a detour to Nanjupuram. Sit for a while near the samadhi. Close your eyes. You might just feel the gentle, invisible hand of the Yogi brushing away your illusions. (I take refuge at the holy feet of the great Nanjupuram master.) Have you visited Nanjupuram or experienced the Yogi's grace? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Who was this mysterious Yogi? Was he an avatar, a Siddhar, or simply a realized soul? Let’s dive into the legend. Known affectionately as "Nanjupuram Swami" or "Periyava" (The Great One), this Yogi lived a simple, nomadic life centered around the small village of Nanjupuram, near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district. Unlike many ostentatious gurus, he wore only a simple loincloth ( kaupinam ), carried a wooden staff, and was often found meditating under a tree or sitting by the temple tank.
