The ceiling vent was loose. And behind the grate, something blinked red.
The third line appeared, smaller, urgent:
Curiosity outweighed caution.
The subject line landed in Dmitri’s inbox at 3:47 AM.
The file unpacked itself before he could stop it – a ghost script that bloomed across his screen like black ice. Then the terminal cleared.
The screen flickered, and the office lights dimmed. Dmitri looked
Dmitri clicked.
His keyboard clicked on its own. A log scrolled up – not code, but memories . His first login as a junior dev. The late-night coffee stain on server 4B. The argument he’d had with Marisol two hours ago, alone in his car.
He reached for the power cord.
He froze.
