-no Estas Invitada A Mi Bat Mitzvah- Direct
Sophie stared at the screen. Her chest felt tight.
“ No estás invitada a mi bat mitzvah ,” Sophie said, practicing her Spanish for the bilingual theme her parents had chosen. You are not invited to my bat mitzvah.
“I’m being principled.”
Two weeks before the big day, an invitation came in the mail. It was from Elena—to her bat mitzvah, scheduled for six months later. The envelope was addressed in Elena’s loopy handwriting, complete with a heart over the i in Sophie . -No estas invitada a mi bat Mitzvah-
“You’re still not invited,” Sophie said. “Not to the party.”
“She really thinks she’s going to sing at her own bat mitzvah?” Elena was saying, her voice doing that mean-girl lilt she’d been practicing lately. “Her voice cracks like a frog with a cold. I’m just saying, someone should tell her before she embarrasses herself.”
Sophie nodded slowly. She thought about the pink marble notebook, the burned page, the RETURN TO SENDER . She thought about the angel Jacob wrestled—how the fight left him wounded, but also blessed. Sophie stared at the screen
Are you really going to fake sick tomorrow?
Sophie stared at it for a long time. Then she wrote RETURN TO SENDER in black marker and dropped it back in the mailbox.
At the very top, with three stars and a doodle of a unicorn, was Elena Katz. You are not invited to my bat mitzvah
“No.”
Three dots appeared immediately. Then disappeared. Then appeared again.
That was before the Incident.
After the service, during the reception, while everyone was eating miniature quiches and dancing to the Hora, Sophie walked over to the back row. Elena was still sitting there, alone, holding a crumpled napkin.
She put the phone down and didn’t sleep. The next morning, Sophie stood at the bimah in her silver flats, looking out at the congregation. Her voice did crack—twice, actually, once on a high note and once on a Hebrew word she’d practiced a hundred times. But people smiled anyway. Her grandmother cried. Her father gave her a thumbs-up so enthusiastic it looked like he was hailing a taxi.
