We meet Dika’s circle of Indonesian friends, including his more confident and successful friend, . Dika is secretly in love with a fellow student named Wulan (played by Maudy Ayunda in her film debut). Wulan is bright, sweet, and seems to enjoy Dika’s company, but she is clearly more interested in someone else – a charismatic, athletic, and popular student named Rangga .
Dika’s days consist of pining over Wulan, listening to her talk about Rangga, and giving her advice on how to get Rangga’s attention. He becomes her emotional confidant, her "best friend," but never her romantic interest. This is the crux of the sekunder theme: he is the backup, the second choice, the shoulder to cry on but not the one she cries for.
The film opens with a humorous, self-deprecating voice-over. Dika explains his theory about the "Temporary Girlfriend" – a concept where a guy, lonely and lacking confidence, settles for a relationship that is convenient rather than genuine. He frames this as being stuck as the "second option" (the sekunder ) in someone’s heart, always behind the primary, more desirable person.
