In the demanding world of industrial process control, accurate temperature measurement is not merely a matter of efficiency—it is a cornerstone of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. At the heart of most industrial temperature sensors lies the thermowell: a pressure-tight fitting designed to protect a temperature probe (such as a thermocouple or RTD) from harsh process conditions. However, a thermowell is not a simple pipe fitting. It is a dynamic structure that, when subjected to fluid flow, can experience catastrophic failure due to vortex-induced vibration. This is where thermowell calculation software has transitioned from a convenient tool to an absolute engineering necessity. The Physics Problem: Why Calculation is Mandatory To appreciate the software, one must first understand the problem. As fluid flows past a cylindrical thermowell, vortices shed alternately from its sides. If the frequency of this vortex shedding matches the thermowell’s natural frequency, resonance occurs—a phenomenon known as "lock-in." This can lead to high-cycle fatigue, causing the thermowell to crack or break off entirely within hours or even minutes. Beyond vibration, engineers must also assess static stress from pressure, dynamic stress from drag forces, and material compatibility.
